AMD purchases Nat’l Semi unit

August 9, 2003 – Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Sunnyvale, CA, plans to acquire the information appliances unit of National Semiconductor. Terms of the deal, scheduled to be completed in August, were not disclosed. With the agreement, AMD will assume command of National Semi’s Geode family of microprocessors, targeted at smart displays and set-top boxes. AMD will bring on board approximately 132 workers from National Semi, while another 65 will be laid off.
