Stone named IFT president

SEPT. 2–CHICAGO–Herbert Stone, president of the food marketing research and consulting firm, Tragon Corp., has been elected president-elect of the Institute of Food Technologists as determined by a vote of its members.

Stone succeeds Ann Hollingsworth as president-elect. Hollingsworth, president of Better Built Foods of Carrollton, Ga, assumes the responsibilities of IFT president beginning today, the conclusion of her one-year term as president-elect. Stone will follow Hollingsworth as IFT president beginning September, 2004.

“IFT is the cornerstone of the food science and technology profession, representing scientists, engineers, technologists, and other professionals, and all look to IFT for guidance and direction for a safe and wholesome food supply,” said Stone. “I derived many benefits from my membership with IFT, and consider my involvement. . .as a way of repaying some of those benefits.”

Named an IFT Fellow in 1984 for distinguished contributions to food science and technology during his career, Stone is an active member within IFT sections and divisions, and has served on the IFT publications committee and executive committee, among others. In 2001, Stone was named Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology in the United Kingdom.

During his campaign, Stone announced plans to focus his efforts on working to attract new members, increasing the use of the Internet as the platform by which IFT communicates with its members, and increasing dialogue with international members and affiliated organizations.

Stone earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University of Massachusetts and doctorate from the University of California at Davis. He has served as department chair of Stanford Research Institute and was co-founder and president of Etel Inc.
