Caliper, Affymetrix team up on tools

Jan. 13, 2004 — Caliper Technologies Corp. (Quote, Profile, News, Web) announced Tuesday it was teaming up with Affymetrix Inc. (Quote, News, Web) and tweaking its name.

Hopkinton, Mass.-based Caliper, which is changing its name to Caliper Life Sciences, will jointly develop products with Santa Clara, Calif.-based Affymetrix. The two companies plan to launch hybrid microarray-microfluidic systems that reduce processing time, labor costs and variability, and enable researchers to industrialize their genomic research, according to a news release.

Affymetrix will market and distribute the products, the first of which are expected later this year, and Caliper will serve as an original equipment manufacturer. Caliper also will provide installation, training and field support for the new systems, the release said.

Caliper, listed on Nasdaq, was trading at 8.13 Tuesday morning, up from 7.66 Monday. Affymetrix, also listed on Nasdaq, was trading at 24.68 Tuesday morning, up from 24.22 Monday.
