Soitec expands in Asia, hires SOI pioneer

August 27, 2004 – Soitec, Bernin, France, a developer of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers and other substrates, has opened new Asian operations in partnership with distributor Seika Corp.

Tokyo-based Soitec Asia Inc. will offer SOI wafers and other substrates; also, its establishment “confirm[s] that Asia, and especially Japan, is at the heart of our strategy,” stated Pascal Mauberger, chairman and CEO of Soitec Asia.

Joining the team as chief scientist is Makoto Yoshimi, who has worked on SOI research since the 1980s, and most recently was vice-chairman of the Japanese International Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) committee.
