Toshiba combines NAND, SD controller on a MCP

June 16, 2006 – Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. (TAEC) and parent company Toshiba Corp. have developed a multichip package (MCP) memory that incorporates a GB-class NAND flash memory and an SD card interface controller along with standard MCP memories.

The 12x18x1.2mm device includes a NAND flash memory with a capacity of up to 2GB with a controller supporting an SD card interface. It can be integrated into an MCP that stacks standard MCP memory for mobile phones, including LP SDRAM + NAND flash memory and PSRAM + NOR flash memory. Mass production is slated to begin in August.

By stacking a large capacity NAND flash memory and SD card controller with standard MCP memories, the new memory package, dubbed “GB MCP,” will enable better performance in digital cameras and music devices — such as storage of more than 500 four-minute songs, recorded at a bit rate of 12kpbs, noted Scott Beekman, senior business development manager for mobile memory products for TAEC.
