May 21, 2012 — ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq:ONNN), silicon supplier for energy-efficient electronics, expanded its Roznov, Czech Republic, operations with a new 4,000sq.m. research and design facility, a quarter of which is high-tech laboratories.
The center will focus on the development of energy-efficient power solutions for use in televisions, notebook computers, battery chargers, white goods, and light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and wireless applications.
The Roznov Design Center will be opened tomorrow by Keith Jackson, president and CEO of ON Semiconductor, under the patronage of Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas.
“The Roznov design team is charged with developing innovative technologies and products to improve energy usage within the myriad of electronics manufactured by our global customers,” said Jackson.
Minimizing the impact on the environment was an important consideration during the design and construction of the new Roznov design center building, created with power-efficient heating and cooling systems, energy recuperation systems, high-efficiency windows, and effective internal insulation. The building was designed byTeen Engineering and architect Michael Malysa. The general contractor for construction was Skanska.
ONNN has operated in the Czech Republic since 1999, when the company spun off from Motorola. ON Semiconductor and the Czech government made financial investments into the company’s R&D, manufacturing, business support operations, and employees in Roznov and Brno. “The ongoing cooperation and subsidy support we receive from the Czech government, Czechinvest and EU funds have been fundamental to our decision to continue to invest in and grow our operations in the Czech Republic,” said Jackson. Czech subsidies are used for advanced local training and to bring in equipment for expanded research, design, laboratories, and manufacturing operations in the country.
Jackson notes that ON Semiconductor has expanded its manufacturing capabilities and capacity at its Roznov fabs, in addition to building the new Roznov design center facility. It has also expanded its IT and new product design teams by more than 50 people.
ONNN joined IC Insights’ list of top 25 semiconductor companies for the first time in 2011.
The Roznov campus includes the design center, a 6” wafer manufacturing fab, a silicon wafer production facility, and business operations support teams. The campus employs approximately 1,300 people. In addition, the company has about 100 employees in a design facility in Brno, which it acquired in 2008 and is focused primarily on development of state-of-the-art analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits for automotive applications. ONNN also works with area universities to support and connect electronics engineering education and students with the industry.
