National Semi Moves to 8-in. Wafer Production

South Portland, ME–National Semiconductor Corp. announced it is investing $600 million to expand its South Portland, ME manufacturing facility, marking the company`s first commercial endeavor into 8-in. wafer manufacturing.

The expansion is a culmination of a $1 billion investment commitment in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities this year. National Semiconductor`s Data Management Division headquarters, will add 40,000 ft2 of Class 1 cleanroom manufacturing area to the present 540,000 ft2 South Portland site.

The Jacobs-Sirrine Engineering Group (Portland, OR) will design the new fab. In 1994, the plant had added 23,000 ft2 of manufacturing space, 12,000 of which were for a cleanroom for 6-in. BiCMOS manufacturing. Volume production is slated for the summer of 1997.
