New test for enumerating bacteria

Idexx Laboratories, Inc. has introduced a new total coliform/E.coli test for enumerating bacteria in food. The new test, called SimPlate, improves laboratory efficiency by reducing or eliminating the most time-consuming portions of current bacterial quantification methods. The SimPlate test simplifies counting, needs no media preparation, requires 24 hours of incubation, and reduces dilution steps. The test is performed by mixing dehydrated media powder with sterile water and the food sample, placing it in the sterile SimPlate device, and incubating for 24 hours. Wells containing viable total coliform bacteria turn red; wells containing E. coli fluoresce. The SimPlate is available in two counting ranges, greater than 700 cfu or greater than 1,600 cfu.
