New respirator standard to come in 1998
Pittsburgh, PA
After July 10, 1998, non-powered, air-purifying particulate-filter respirators will have to comply with a new National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) federal regulation that incorporates advances in respirator testing and manufacturing technology. Manufacturers must adhere to the new standard, 42 CFR Part 84, which tests respirators under much more demanding conditions. Mine Safety Appliances Co. (Pittsburgh, PA), a respirator manufacturer, offers two informational bulletins, which outline the details of the new standard. Contact the company at (888)867-0602 to request Bulletin No. 1000-30 (“Intelligence Report: Getting ready for 42 CFR Part 84”), or Bulletin No. 1000-36 (“NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 Compliant cartridges and filters for air purifying respirators”). — KS
