Saint-Gobain adopts advanced melting technology from Praxair

Paris

Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, the world`s largest glassmaker, has incorporated oxy-fuel combustion technology and advanced oxygen supply systems at divisions in France and the U.S. A. Praxair, Inc. (Danbury, CT) is promoting oxy-fuel combustion as a replacement for air-based glass melting to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in order to meet tightening regulations while contributing to improved glass quality and increased productivity. Another benefit of using oxygen in furnace firings is shorter furnace rebuild time. Praxair and its alliance partner, Corning Inc., provided oxygen vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) systems, combustion burners, furnace design consultation and start-up services to Saint-Gobain Desjonquere`s glass bottle plant in Mers-les-Bains, France, and CertainTeed Corp.`s fiberglass plant in Chowchilla, CA. — SES
