Applied Materials strengthens thrust into 300 mm arena

Santa Clara, CA

Applied Materials is creating a dedicated 300 mm development and customer applications center at its headquarters in Santa Clara. The planned cleanroom will initially house up to 35 dedicated 300 mm systems, as well as analytical equipment and wet labs. The center is expected to be in operation during the first quarter of 1998. Additional facilities should be operational by 1999. The company has also announced the establishment of an advanced metrology center to support 300 mm and other equipment development.

In addition, a 153,000 square-foot applications laboratory is being constructed at Applied`s Arques campus in Santa Clara at a cost of approximately $309 million. The Arques facility will function as a process development mini-fab and house about 60 systems — most of them in the 300 mm category. One of its objectives will be development of integrated process sequences that can be prequalified prior to installation in customer facilities. The Arques installations are scheduled to begin in November 1998, with project completion planned by February 1999. — SES
