Facility expansion for children`s vaccine

Sanford, NC

Wyeth-Lederle Vaccines, a division of American Home Products Corp., has expanded its infant vaccine component production facilities in Lee County to include a 24,000-square-foot addition that will produce a new conjugate vaccine to help protect children against Streptococcus pneumoniae, the cause of pneumoccoccal disease. Pneumoccoccal disease is a major factor in common childhood ear infections as well as more invasive infections, including pneumonia and infection in the blood, brain and spinal cord. The company plans to release the vaccine in 1999, following certification and licensure by the Food and Drug Administration. — TGW
