Reports of FS209E death exaggerated

To the Editor:

I am writing to clear up erroneous information concerning the status of Federal Standard 209. At the IEST Executive Board meeting in April 1998, the Board decided to allow IEST Working Group 100 (the document`s authors) to make final recommendations to the General Services Administration (document owner) regarding the future use of Fed-Std-209E. Such recommendations are yet to be made, and so Federal Standard 209 has not been

“replaced,” as stated in your August edition [“New ISO/TC 209 document outlines master plan for cleanroom construction,” August 1998, p.1]. No recommendations came out of the IEST Annual Technical Meeting in May in Phoenix. Working Group 100 is, however, scheduled to meet again at the fall IEST event in November.
