Varian Associates is reorganizing its core healthcare systems, semiconductor equipment, and instruments businesses into three separate public companies. The reorganization plan, which has been approved by Varian`s board of directors, gives each business unit greater flexibility in addressing their respective markets. The healthcare systems business is organized around two product lines–radiation oncology equipment for cancer treatment and X-ray tubes for various diagnostic uses. The semiconductor equipment business fabricates and services ion implantation systems; the instruments business is a major manufacturer of analytical and research instrumentation for industrial and scientific applications. — TGW
