The long-awaited transition to 300mm wafer production may finally swing into action, after leading chipmakers Intel Corp. and Texas Instruments announced moves to bring the larger wafers into production in the next several years.

In its first firm disclosure of volume 300mm production plans, Intel said it will spend $2.0 billion to bring up a 300mm fab at its Chandler, AZ, campus, and Texas Instruments said it will begin equipping a 300mm fab in Dallas this year.
