Technology — April 18, 2000 — Lucent and Bell Labs Announce Silicon Insulation at Six Atoms Thickness

MURRAY HILL, NJ—Lucent and Bell Labs say silicon dioxide reliably insulates at a thickness of 6 atoms. The two companies have found a way to pare the thickness of a semiconductor's insulating layer of silicon dioxide from 12 atoms to fewer than 6 atoms, and to manufacture the product using current practices.
