Christmas in July

Every summer in Chicago, there's a special occasion called Christmas in July – a non-secular event during which companies and individuals donate their time to volunteer in their communities. Many of the collaborated efforts assist people with home repairs; sometimes the work is cosmetic, like painting, and other times people tackle structural tasks so a home can remain habitable. In a way, the results of Christmas in July activities can look like a troop of contractors descended on a community and rebuilt it in a day. People take the skills they have (and honestly, some that they never thought they had) and apply them to help others. The same program likely exists in other cities across the United States, as well. It certainly is a great way to help your neighbors.

Identifying what people around you need and following through with action can be difficult but, when successful, the rewards are great for everyone. In our own very small way at Advanced Packaging magazine, we'd like to take a twist of the “Christmas in July” theme and pose a few questions: How can you best help your colleagues in this industry? What skills do you have or techniques that you use that you can share with your colleagues? On the flip side, are there any needs that you have that some “contractors” can help you with as you maneuver through your job? It might be hard to believe, but we are now in the midst of planning our 2001 issues, so let us know if you have an idea that you would like to share with your colleagues. Or if you find that you really could use some more up-to-date information on a topic, now is the time to let the editorial staff at Advanced Packaging magazine know about it. You'd be surprised how we can take these wish lists and turn them into content that will help the industry continue to move forward. Drop us note, give us a ring, zap us an e-mail or visit us at Semicon West in San Jose – we'll be at booth 9300 this year. As always, we look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, don't forget to help a neighbor this summer – even a little goes a long way.

Until next month,

Amy Knutson-Strack
