Applied Materials and Varian Semiconductor Equipment Resolve Litigation

Santa Clara, California–Oct. 17, 2000–Applied Materials, Inc. and Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. have reached a comprehensive, global settlement that terminates all outstanding litigation between the two companies.

As part of the settlement and in return for payment by Varian, Applied Materials granted Varian a license for past use of four of Applied Materials’ physical vapor deposition (PVD) patents and released all claims for infringement of those four PVD patents by the Inova system as it was made and sold as of May 7, 1997. Varian, in turn, dismissed all of its counterclaims in the patent infringement lawsuit and its antitrust lawsuit against Applied Materials.

Related patent infringement litigation between Applied Materials and Novellus, a company that in 1997 purchased the Inova product line from Varian that allegedly is based on Applied Materials’ patented PVD technolgy, is ongoing.
