Praxair China to supply industrial gases to SMIC

Danbury, Connecticut–Praxair China has signed a 15-year contract to supply Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) with industrial gases.

Praxair China will install an air separation plant and hydrogen production facility to produce nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and hydrogen on a site near SMIC’s Phase 1, which includes three fabs in Shanghai’s Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Park. Helium will be supplied in bulk liquid form.

“Praxair has already invested over $200 million in China and we will continue to seek additional opportunities in the new Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Park,” says Dennis Reilley, chairman and CEO of Praxair, Inc. Praxair also supplies on-site and bulk gases to Hua Hong/ NEC’s wafer fab in PuDong, Shanghai.

The Hi-Tech Park is being created by the Shanghai government. It is estimated the Park will have a total of 15 fabs when the first phase is fully occupied. Additional fabs are planned in the second phase. To date, four fabs have been announced and at least 12 more are under consideration.
