Praxair to Provide Gases for SMIC

Danbury, CT — Praxair China has signed a 15-year contract to provide industrial gasses to Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation in Shanghai’s Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Park.

Under the deal, announced Monday, Praxair China will install an air separation plant and hydrogen production facility on a site near SMIC’s Phase 1, which includes three fabs. The new facility will produce nitrogen, oxygen, argon and hydrogen. Helium will be supplied in bulk form.

“Praxair has already invested over $200 million in China and we will continue to seek additional opportunities in the new Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Park,” said Dennis Reilley, chairman and CEO of Praxair.

The Hi-Tech Park, which is being created by the Shanghai government, is expected to have 15 fabs when the first phase is complete, with more planned during the second phase. Currently, four fabs have been completed and 12 more are being considered.

Praxair is the largest industrial gases company in North and South America and one of the largest worldwide.
