TI rolls out highly integrated delta-sigma ADC

Tucson, Arizona–Texas Instruments Inc. today announced a highly integrated delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) from the company’s Burr-Brown product line, which features 24 bits of no missing code (NMC) performance, operates from 2.7V to 5.25V, and consumes less than 1mW of power.

The ADS1216 is ideal, reports TI, for high-resolution measurement and control applications in industrial process control, portable instrumentation, smart transmitters, weigh scales, and chromatography.

The ADS1216 provides unparalleled analog performance and integration by offering a 24-bit delta-sigma ADC, eight-channel multiplexer, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), input buffer, burn-out current sources, dual independent current DACs, on-chip voltage reference, external differential reference inputs, on-chip temperature sensor, programmable digital I/O, and a standard SPI serial interface, according to the company.

“By combining such a high level of electronic circuitry on a small chip, we are providing designers with a cost-effective, fully-tested, easy-to-use solution that will significantly improve the design and performance of their most challenging mixed-signal systems,” says Robert Schreiber, strategic marketing engineer of Burr-Brown Data Converter products from TI.

The multiplexer for the ADS1216 supports eight inputs channels, which can be configured as differential pairs in any combination. This allows up to eight separate inputs to be connected and converted by the ADS1216. Burn-out current sources are provided, giving the ability to detect an open circuit or short circuit condition on the analog input. A selectable buffer is also provided that can be controlled through either a pin or software control.

The device’s PGA provides for gains of up to 128 bits, according to TI, and can also correct for analog offset voltages of up to half the full-scale range–allowing maximum utilization of the PGA function.

Analog-to-digital conversion is accomplished with a 2nd-order modulation and a fully-programmable sinc filter. The data output rate of the sinc filter is programmable through the decimation register. The settling time and noise is programmable through filter control bits. Settling in one conversion cycle is possible using this feature. The serial interface is SPI compatible. The ADS1216 also includes programmable digital I/O (8 pins are provided for this feature) that can be used for input or output–allowing easy isolation between the processor and the input measurement and control.

The ADS1216 is available now and is packaged in a TQFP-48. It is priced from $7.45 in 1,000 piece quantities. Delivery is from stock.
