UMC reports generator damage during recent power outage

Hsinchu, Taiwan–A power outage that occurred in Taiwan’s Hsinchu Science Based Industrial Park at 6:30 pm on December 25 resulted in generator damages of NT$30 million (US$10 million) at United Microelectronics Corp.’s (UMC) Fab 8E. No injuries were reported, according to UMC officials, and production lines were not affected.

UMC reports that its emergency power generators went into operation as designed during the outage. However, at approximately 7:40 pm, smoke coming from the generator room–caused by overheating generators–was discovered. The situation was under control by 8:00 pm, according to the company.

The power supply was restored by Taiwan Power Co. at 8:22 pm, and Fab 8E resumed operations at 8:40 pm.

UMC now is evaluating the impact on production caused by the power outage.
