Samsung on top of TFT-LCD market for 3rd consecutive year

Seoul, Korea–A recent thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) market survey by ICD Japan market researchers places Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. on top of the market for the third consecutive year–with a 20.1% market share at the end of 2000.

Samsung credits its success to insightful investment ahead of the competition and a strong research and development program. The company correctly predicted that the market trends would favor larger-screen TFT-LCDs, and its decision to focus on 14.1-in. LCDs for notebook PCs proved to be effective.

This year, ICD Japan predicts that the world market for TFT-LCDs will reach 46 million units in 2001–a 48% increase over 2000–and that the TFT-LCD market mainstay will likely shift from 14.1-in. LCDs for notebook PCs to 17-in. LCDs for desktop monitors.
