Newbury Park, California–Semtech Corp., a supplier of mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, computers, and industrial equipment, today unveiled a new surge protection device based on the company’s advanced transient voltage supression (TVS) diode technology. The new device paves the way to robust, simple, and low-cost protection of telecom and datacom systems from lightning, electrostatic discharge, and electrical fast transient events that enter via the system’s input/output signal lines.
Semtech’s integrated LC05-6 device is intended to provide secondary surge protection for two signal pairs in telecom and datacom systems, and exceeds the performance metrics established by industry standards including Bellcore GR1089 (intra-building), International Telecommunication Union K.20, and International Electrotechnical Commission 61000-4-5.
“Voltage suppression is more critical in today’s high performance communications systems than ever before,” says Tom Dugan, director of marketing for protection products at Semtech. “That’s because modern tranceivers are manufactured using the state-of-the-art fabrication processes that employ much finer geometries than in the past, making them more susceptible to damage from voltage transients than older parts.”
The Semtech LC05-6 is available immediately in limited volumes, with production volumes now ramping. In quantities of 1,000 units or more, the LC05-6 is priced at $2.47 each, in standard tape and reel packaging. The LC05-6 is packaged in a standard JEDEC SO-16 package.
