April 9, 2001 — AUSTIN, TX — A new initiative aimed at creating more opportunities for those looking to get into the high tech field has been launched by the Austin Area Semiconductor Executive Council.
Destination:Digital is designed to provide a road map of sorts to students, educators, parents and career seekers.
“The high tech age is not just about machines and computers,” said Gary Heerssen, vice president of AMD, one of the nine companies that make up the Austin Area Semiconductor Executive Council. “It is about people finding ways to make life better for themselves and others. We have just begun to explore and find out where technology will lead us, and we want everyone to get the chance to participate in that exploration.”
Other high tech companies involved in the executive council are Applied Materials, Cypress, Kinetics, Motorola, Samsung, International SEMATECH, SEMI and Tokyo Electron. Area colleges, universities, school and community organizations are also involved with the council.
Destination Digital has been a key factor in the creation of the cleanroom facility at the Austin Community College as well as building the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology curriculum.
