Vitesse unveils switch fabric strategy

April 10, 2001 – Camarillo, CA – Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has unveiled a switch fabric strategy that will deliver a family of scalable packet fabrics for core, access, optical and enterprise networking markets.

The switch fabrics are designed to provide a ubiquitous solution that will have the ability to cross multiple system markets. Additionally, the switch fabrics will offer a low-risk methodology for new system development, said Vitesse. The strategy has been implemented for the first time with the introduction of the CrossStream E chipset.

According to Vitesse, the expanded strategy focuses on providing a large range of switch fabric products based on industry-standard interfaces and advanced QoS capabilities.

“Our philosophy is to couple our proven serial backplane technology with best-in-class switch fabric architectures,” said Gary Lee, VP for switch fabric development, in a recent release. “In doing so, we’ve established a roadmap of fabric products that allows our customers to future-proof their systems, allowing easy migration to larger platforms in the future, while protecting today’s investments in line cards.”
