Jenoptik Forms Alliance with Trumpf Group

June 19, 2001 — DITZINGEN, Germany — Jenoptik AG is investing $9.4 million in a new cleanroom facilty at its Jena, Germany site as it looks to strengthen its position in the high-performance diode laser market. In addition, the company has teamed with industrial laser makers Trumpf Group.

The agreement, which is retroactive as of January 1, allows Trumpf to acquire a 25.1 percent share of Jenoptik Laserdiode GmbH. The remaining 74.9 percent remains with Jenoptik.

“Two companies, each market leaders in their respective fields, have joined forces here. The interplay between diode manufacture and industrial application will quickly lead to innovative approaches and new spheres of application, ” said H.C. Lothar Spath, chairman of the board of Jenoptik. “After ASML in the high-performance optics sector and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG in the digital camera sector, we have now gained a third powerful partner in Trumpf.”

Production in Jenoptik’s new cleanroom is expected to begin this year, and officials are hopeful that sales for FY 2001 will increase 50 percent over the previous year.
