September 26, 2001 — HEILBRONN, Germany — A new joint research and development group has been created at the University of Ulm by Atmel, Multilink Technology and United Monolithic.
The new center, called the “Competence Center on Integrated Circuits in Communications” will focus on research and development of integrated circuits for wireless and high-speed opto-electronics systems, officials say. It will also be used for publicly funded research and development projects.
The university, located in Ulm, Germany, boasts a 7,500 square foot cleanroom designed specifically for microelectronics.
“Our goal is to exploit synergistic design effects between broadband wireless and opto-electronic applications, as well as between different semiconductor technologies,” said Hermann Schumacher, who will act as the center’s director of operations.
The center will be supported by the project’s industrial partners, and initial funding was secured through the State of Baden-Wurttemberg’s Ministry of Science, Research and Art as well from a contribution from the scientific funding group Stifterverband fur die deutsche Wissenschaft.
