October 10, 2001 – Chicago, IL – Motorola Inc. said it now plans to cut an additional 7,000 jobs this year, raising the number of planned cuts for the year to 39,000 positions.
Motorola President and COO Robert Growney told analysts 4,000 of the new job cuts will come through the sale of businesses, while the rest will be through other cuts and attrition.
The 39,000 cuts this year would represent 26% of the company’s total work force and would reduce the total to 108,000 by the end of the year.
Motorola reported a third quarter loss, its third straight quarterly loss as it continued to face declining demand for its wireless telephones and semiconductors amid the global telecommunications slowdown.
