November 13, 2001 — CANONSBURG, PA — Bayside Automation, a supplier of automated assembly systems and manufacturing product/process consulting services, signed a three-year contract with Axcelis Technologies, a supplier of high technology products to the semiconductor industry.
According to the contract, Bayside will manufacture subassemblies for Axcelis semiconductor ion implant systems. The components will range in size from small, desktop-sized modules to complete chassis systems and additional complex assemblies. Bayside will produce the assemblies at its Canonsburg-PA site. All manufacturing assembly will take place in a newly installed ISO Class 7 (Class 10,000) cleanroom for product assembly, testing and operations to comply with IOS specifications.
“We are very pleased to have been awarded this project,” said John Donlon, Bayside Automation vice-president of sales and marketing. “Axcelis selected Bayside because of ‘value-added’ engineering capabilities, as well as the strength of our internal processes and our ability to consult on future product design activities to reduce unit cost and improve performance.”
Also as part of the contract, Bayside will develop and implement on-site customized test procedures for the Bayside-built subassemblies. The test fixtures will ensure that the Bayside components are accurate and functional prior to delivery to Axcelis.
As a result of the Axcelis program, Bayside will hire additional manufacturing employees to address the forecasted volumes beyond the first year
The Axcelis contract became effective November 13 and supports the company’s Rockville, MD manufacturing operations. Bayside projects that the opportunities with Axcelis will grow significantly.
