Hynix, Micron to meet this week

Jan. 21, 2002 – Seoul, Korea – Officials of Hynix Semiconductor Inc. will resume talks with Micron Technology Inc. concerning the possibility of an alliance between the two chipmakers, the Korean Yonhap News Agency said.

In addition, Hynix’s President Park Jong-sup plans to visit Micron’s corporate headquarters in Boise, ID, according to an unnamed Hynix official.

Last month, Hynix officials said Micron was seeking a merger of the two companies’ memory chip operations. Micron offered to buy Hynix’s memory chip operations for $3 billion, but didn’t want to assume Hynix’s $6 billion in debt.

A preliminary deal between Hynix and Micron may be delayed until mid-February because the global chipmakers must consider the interests of the industry and their employees, Yonhap reported.
