March 21, 2002 — Shanghai, China — M+W Zander, a Jenoptik subsidiary, has received a follow-on order from China-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) to engineer and construct a cleanroom.
The cleanroom will be 8,000 square meters and is expected to cost $2 million to construct. The company expects the cleanroom to be tool-ready by June. Last year, M+W Zander equipped the SMIC’s Fab 1, Fab 3B and Office/Support1 with cleanroom facilities.
SMIC’s pilot production began in September 2001. Officials for SMIC report that the company plans to build six fabs in the PuDong New Area of Shanghai.
