Segway to roll into U.K. market

July 22, 2002 — BAE Systems and Segway LLC said they will jointly market the Segway Human Transporter in the United Kingdom, according to a news release.

The partnership’s initial efforts for the self-balancing, electric-powered device, which contains MEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers, will be on the United Kingdom’s aerospace and defense industries. Dean Kamen, Segway’s chairman, said the transporter is ideal in those areas because it’s smaller and lighter than other vehicles and moves easily between indoors and outdoors, the release said.

The gyroscopes and sensors are made by U.K.-based Silicon Sensing Systems, a joint venture between BAE and Sumitomo Precision Products of Japan.
