Lockheed Martin breaks ground on coatings facility

AUG. 23–MARIETTA, GA–Lockheed Martin has begun the first phase of a new $ 44 million coatings facility here for the F-22 Raptor fighter program.

The facility incorporates the latest robotics technology to improve the coating of the aircraft’s subassemblies. Phase one of the building consists of one bay with two
53-by-38-foot paint booths, each with two paint robots.

Eventually, eight new coatings booths will be installed for the major F-22 subassemblies, the company said, adding that the robotic paint booths will be maintained at conditions similar to laboratory cleanrooms.
