NuGen gets grant to develop anthrax test

Aug. 6, 2002 — NuGen Technologies Inc. said it recently received a $100,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop anthrax detection technology.

The Phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant will allow the company to develop an assay based on its method for amplifying and detecting DNA and RNA. The method, called Single Primer Isothermal Amplification Technology, offers rapid, accurate results without the need for complex instrumentation, the firm said in a news release.

If NuGen receives a Phase II grant, it said it would look for a device company willing to integrate the assay into a miniaturized detection system.
