Report predicts surge in nanomaterial packaging

Aug. 27, 2002 — The packaging industry expects to use 5 million pounds of nanocomposite materials within five years, taking advantage of the their strength and resistance to air, moisture and odor, according to a new report.

The $3,500 report, “Nanocomposites for Packaging: New Frontiers and Future Opportunities,” predicts that beer packaging will use 3 million pounds of the additives by 2006, followed by meats and soft drinks.

Other areas discussed in the report by BRG Townsend and Packaging Strategies are cheese, juice, pet food, electronics, pharmaceuticals, automotive and household appliances.
