Matsushita sees optical opportunity

Sept. 12, 2002 — Matsushita Electric Works Ltd. said it plans to produce MEMS-based optical switches as part of a major push into optical communications, according to Jiji Press.

The newly developed switches reportedly will be used in local fiber-optic networks in Japan. The plan also calls for mass-producing other kinds of optical switches and connectors, with initial production set to start next month.

Matsushita ultimately hopes to garner a 20 percent share of the global optical market, and boost its sales to more than $80 million by 2005, the report said.
