Philips Semiconductors cutting 70 jobs In Albuquerque, NM

Sept. 6, 2002 – Albuquerque, NM – Philips Semiconductor has cut 70 jobs at its Albuquerque plant.

Philips, a unit of Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics, blamed a two-year slump in the semiconductor business, reported Dow Jones. The Albuquerque plant makes chips for cell phones and pagers, as well as for the automotive industry.

The layoffs also are part of a cost-reduction program that will include a two-week shutdown of the Albuquerque plant. Philips will have about 600 workers at the plant when it reopens.
