Santec launches optical MEMS device

Oct. 28, 2002 — Santec Corp. of Japan said it has launched a new MEMS-based variable optical attenuator for optical networking systems.

The company said the device, available in one-, four- and eight-channel packages, has been designed to overcome technical and reliability issues in current technology. It’s not affected by external vibrations or mechanical shocks, and it’s hermetically sealed to ensure long-term reliability, according to a news release.

Samples are available, and volume production should begin in January.
