Ultratech Stepper posts Q3 loss

Oct. 16, 2002 — Ultratech Stepper, a San Jose, Calif.-based designer and manufacturer of photolithography equipment, announced it had a net loss of $18.9 million in the third quarter, or 83 cents per share, compared with a $26 million loss for the same period last year, according to a news release.

Net sales were $7.3 million, compared with $24.3 million for the third quarter of 2001. Customers continued to be conservative during the quarter, the release said, and the company faced lower rates of new system orders as well as order cancellations. The company said it responded by cutting costs and controlling expenses.
