Dec. 17, 2002 — Innovative Micro Technology (IMT) said it received $1.8 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Army to develop a MEMS-based system for purifying human blood stem cells.
IMT said the device under development incorporates parallel MEMS devices that rapidly and easily purify cells for therapeutic and research applications. The firm called it enabling technology for treating patients with cell therapy, according to a news release.
The goal of the project is to create an immune system outside the body as a test bed for developing protections against agents of bioterrorism, the release said.
