Verimetra receives ‘cutting-edge’ patent

Dec. 20, 2002 — Verimetra Inc. said it has received its first patent for the use of MEMS sensors on metal cutting instruments.

The Pittsburgh-based maker of MEMS devices for the medical industry said the U.S. patent allows it to expand its business to include cutting instruments for personal grooming, industrial cutting, consumer hardware products and other applications.

Verimetra’s prototype is called the Data Knife, a MEMS-laden scalpel. The name also refers to the firm’s suite of tools under development that incorporate sensing and measuring devices to track and record information during surgery.
