Nano researcher wins Asian-American award

Jan. 28, 2003 — Anvar Zakhidov, associate director of the University of Texas at Dallas’ NanoTech Institute, will receive an Asian-American Engineer of the Year award from the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA.

Zakhidov, an Uzbekistan native who joined UT Dallas in 2001 to establish the nano institute, is being honored for his efforts to advance nanoscience and nanotechnology, according to a university news release. He is credited with developing the concept of tunable photonic crystals, nanoscale tubes and tunnels on a wafer or fiber with potential applications in optoelectronics and telecommunications.

The engineering institute, a professional nonprofit group created in 1917 by Chinese-American engineers, is scheduled to present the award in Dallas next month.
