STMicro unveils accelerometer for handhelds

Feb. 20, 2003 — STMicroelectronics, a Geneva-based developer of semiconductor products, announced release of a new accelerometer that integrates a MEMS-based sensor and interface chip.

The LIS3LO2 Three-Axis Linear Accelerometer is designed specifically for mobile phones, handheld computers and other small battery-operated products. The design allows for one-handed operation by virtue of a tilt interface instead of buttons or other controls, the company said in a news release.
