M+W Zander to build TFT fab

APRIL 28–JENA, GERMANY–M+W Zander, a subsidiary of the Jenoptik technology group, has received an order from AU Optronics, Longtan, Taiwan, to build a 161,400-square-foot cleanroom.

The $2 million color filter fab is expected to be completed by the summer of 2003. The new factory will manufacture AU Optronics thin film transistors (TFT) for flat screen monitors.

AU Optronics was founded in September 2001 through the merger of Acer Display Technology, Inc. and the Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation.

According to the company, it is the world’s third largest producer of TFT-LCD monitors. In the past, M+W Zander has engineered flat-screen monitor production facilities for Acer.
