BAE, AMI making new MEMS gyro

May 20, 2003 — BAE Systems and AMI Semiconductor have teamed up to develop next-generation MEMS gyroscopes for vehicle stability control, wheelchairs and model aircraft, according to a news release.

BAE said it chose Idaho-based AMI’s I3T80 platform because the application-specific chips combine high-speed and low-power operation. BAE’s U.K.-based Inertial Systems Division developed the sensor technology.

BAE said it seeks to offer greater cost and performance benefits than its current gyro technology, used in automotive anti-skid and navigation systems, as well as providing the stabilization technology in the Segway Human Transporter.
