IBM aids virtual cell development

May 27, 2003 – Canadian researchers, with support from IBM, have begun developing a virtual version of a cell to cut health care costs, boost drug development and test new treatments, according to a news release.

The scientists at University of Alberta’s Institute of Biomolecular Design are creating a simulation of an E. coli cell as part of the CyberCell project. They seek to manipulate the virtual cell at different levels of molecular resolution and study how it responds, adapts and exploits its virtual environment.

IBM donated computing technology as well as access to computational biology researchers through its Shared University Research program, the release said.
