June 19, 2003 — The U.S. Senate Commerce Committee approved a bill today designating more than $2 billion during the next three years for nanotech research and development.

The bill, which is similar to one already passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, would support nano programs at several government agencies, create offices for coordinating efforts and study the emerging technology’s potential effects.

If the full Senate passes the legislation, representatives from both houses of Congress will meet to work out differences and send a final bill to President Bush. The White House supports the measure and lawmakers seek to pass it before Congress’ annual August recess.
