UMC acquires stake in GemTek

June 30, 2003 – Foundry supplier UMC has acquired $5.7 million worth of shares in GemTek Technology, a Taiwan-based supplier of wireless local area network (WLAN) systems.

GemTek, which recently issued a total of $34 million in new shares, earned $117 million in revenue and $11 million in after-tax earnings in 2002.

UMC also owns stakes in several networking and broadband companies, including SerComm, Billionton, and C-Com, which merged with UMC subsidiary Archtek Telecom.
