Applied Materials victorious in Axcelis patent suit

July 3, 2003 – A jury in the US District Court of Massachusetts ruled that Applied Materials did not infringe upon an Axcelis patent concerning ion implant technology. The court found that Applied Materials’ Swift ion implantation system does not infringe upon Axcelis US patent 4,667,111.

Mary Puma, CEO of Axcelis, acknowledged the court’s decision but said that the company’s patent was restrictive enough on Applied’s product design to limit its market share.
